Discover how to create a 3D environment in Houdini using OpenStreetMap data to generate a procedural city surrounded by a meadow environment. The environment will then be used by Environment Artist Frederick Vallee to demonstrate how to create a birds-eye view and how to take it to an artistic level using Nuke.

This workshop is broken down into easy-to-digest chapters. Each chapter showcases a user-friendly workflow and shows how to efficiently create procedural environments using industry-standard tools. Along the way, he advises how to think outside of the box to tackle challenges as they arise.

This workshop requires basic knowledge of Houdini and will also be beneficial for beginners looking to learn more about fluid simulation since the majority of the chapters are demonstrated step by step. There are limited VEX techniques explored by this workshop, with many more VOP nodes and groups used.

01Layout: Part 1Free

In this workshop, Federick Vallee demonstrates a professional approach to creating large-scale aerial environments efficiently in Houdini. He prioritizes smart workflows over brute force, using techniques such as procedural duplication, appropriate levels of detail for viewing distances, and an organized project structure. By combining real-world map data with artistic freedom for placement, the technique creates believable cityscapes suitable for aerial shots while maintaining manageable file sizes and render times.

Duration: 1h 49s

Layout: Part 1
02Layout: Part 2

Emphasis is placed on a methodical approach to scene layout and render preparation, prioritizing optimization at every step. Federick demonstrates that successful aerial renders don't require excessive detail everywhere; instead, using strategic placement of elements and smart surface adjustments can create convincing results. The next phase involves adding breakup details and refining the overall composition with atmospheric effects to achieve a polished final render.

03Scatter & Details: Part 1

This lesson covers a professional workflow for creating large-scale natural environments by breaking away from uniform patterns and embracing the irregularity of real nature. Realistic environments require layered systems with controlled randomness to mimic how vegetation actually grows. By separating different vegetation types and iteratively refining test renders, artists can create convincing aerial landscapes that balance visual richness with efficient rendering.

04Scatter & Details: Part 2

Attention is directed toward the importance of iterative refinement and attention to detail in environment creation. By addressing issues like vegetation and how elements are scattered across the scene, the environment evolves from basic shapes to a detailed landscape. The procedural approach in Houdini allows for flexible modifications while maintaining consistency, setting up the scene for the final texturing phase.

05Shading & Texturing

This lesson examines a practical, industry-relevant approach to environment texturing that prioritizes artistic control over pure automation. Federick notes that while procedural workflows are valuable for establishing base layouts, achieving professional results requires manual intervention. The process of applying textures and refining based on references shows that environment creation is about balancing technical knowledge with artistic judgment to create believable landscapes.

06Additional Details

In this lesson, Federick uses a professional workflow for adding environmental detail while maintaining performance through strategic optimization. He points out that working with low-resolution assets during the creative phase, then selectively increasing detail only for final rendering, keeps the process fast. The combination of boundary lines and strategic water features adds visual complexity while the caching system keeps the scene efficient and manageable.

07Lighting & Rendering

This lesson exemplifies a workflow that balances render time with creative flexibility by deciding what to accomplish in 3D versus the final compositing stage. By keeping the lighting setup relatively simple and planning atmospheric effects for post-production, Federick demonstrates how to achieve professional results. This approach is well-suited to exterior environments, where fog and clouds can be handled more flexibly as 2D elements.

08Compositing: Part 1

This lesson goes over how compositing is an iterative process of layering subtle effects to build atmospheric depth and mood. Federick emphasizes the importance of working methodically from broad strokes to fine details while constantly referencing source images. Professional-looking results come from patience, experimentation, and understanding how to use technical tools to serve an artistic vision.

09Compositing: Part 2

The final lesson in this workshop showcases a professional approach to creating photorealistic aerial cityscapes from scratch. Federick demonstrates practical problem-solving techniques for tight production scenarios where returning to 3D isn't an option, showing how to creatively manipulate existing image layers. The layered approach results in a polished, cinematic aerial shot that feels naturally photographic rather than purely digital.
