Elevate your Houdini Solaris and USD skills in this comprehensive workshop taught by Lead Lighting Artist Andreas Kjær-Jensen. Perfect for lighting artists and generalists getting started with Solaris, this workshop takes you through the entire process of creating a production-quality sci-fi sequence in Solaris.

Houdini’s Solaris is quickly becoming the industry standard for lighting in Visual Effects. Over the course of 6 hours, Andreas will guide you through creating an action-packed VFX sequence in Houdini. Artists will not only learn how to use Solaris but also gain an understanding of the underlying structure of USD and its application in real-world VFX productions today.

Andreas begins with a thorough introduction to Solaris and USD as a whole, then uses the same techniques and workflows to develop a fully fledged sequence, including shading, layout, cinematic lighting, and pipeline. By completing this workshop, artists will have learned a complete workflow for making their own sequences within Solaris.

Project files, including assets, renders, and textures, are included so subscribers can follow along step-by-step while Andreas builds the scene. You’ll walk away with advanced skills in Solaris, confidence in leveraging USD for VFX production, and a deeper understanding of industry-standard USD and Solaris workflows.

Assets used in this workshop include Action VFX’s Aerial Explosions 3D Assets pack, as well as KitBash3D’s Future Warfare Kit and Spaceships Legacy Kit.

07Layout in Solaris: Part 1

This lesson showcases advanced USD and Houdini workflows for creating complex, performance-optimized environments. The modular approach using variants, references, and instancing creates a scalable system where detailed tunnel environments can be generated procedurally while maintaining fast viewport performance and clean asset organization. The resulting USD structure is highly efficient, with the final environment occupying less than a megabyte despite containing hundreds of detailed modules.

08Layout in Solaris: Part 2

This lesson demonstrates an efficient procedural shading workflow for background geometry that will be seen briefly in motion. Rather than spending time on detailed hand-painted textures, Andreas builds visual complexity through layered procedural techniques, smart use of randomization attributes, and physically plausible masking methods. This approach is particularly well-suited for sci-fi environments where technical, panel-based surfaces can be effectively generated using noise patterns and mathematical operations.

09Scene Assembly in Solaris

This lesson lays the foundation for professional VFX pipeline workflows by demonstrating how to build a scalable scene-assembly system in Houdini. The combination of proper asset management, context-driven shot switching, and automated Python tools creates an efficient workflow that mimics industry standards. While simplified compared to full production pipelines, this setup provides the essential framework for managing multiple shots and assets in a USD-based rendering pipeline.

11FX Shading: Part 1

This lesson demonstrates the technical complexities involved in integrating dynamic effects elements into a lighting pipeline. The emphasis on proper motion blur and material setup underscores the importance of understanding the render engine's behavior when dealing with geometry that transforms over time. The high-intensity emissive approach for the lasers will create a more realistic interaction with the environment, enhancing the overall visual impact of the sci-fi sequence.

12FX Shading: Part 2

This lesson demonstrates an effective approach to creating layered atmospheric effects that enhance the visual depth and realism of a 3D environment. By combining a general fog layer with scattered mist volumes, Andreas adds dimensional quality to the scene while allowing lighting elements, such as lasers and environmental lights, to interact naturally with the atmosphere. The key to success lies in keeping atmospheric effects subtle and secondary to the main elements, and in using proper density scaling and material setup to achieve professional results.
