In this tutorial, Senior Concept Illustrator Alex Nice demonstrates his process of using 2D and 3D tools to compose an illustration of key artwork for film by creating a dynamic action scene from the ‘War of the Worlds’. Alex begins with a mixture of photo-bashing and 2D sketching in Photoshop. In this phase, he covers efficient layer management, composition, design and establishing mood. He then moves on to ZBrush and 3ds Max where he models and renders out the hero assets using V-Ray RT. In the last two chapters, Alex assembles all of the elements, adjusts the lighting and details the illustration to a final polished state ready for presentation.

Introduction
022D Sketching and Layout in PhotoshopFree

This lesson showcases a professional approach to digital matte painting that combines 3D rendering, photo manipulation, and digital painting. Alex’s methodology emphasizes the importance of establishing strong composition and values before moving to color and detail work. The systematic approach to layer organization and the focus on guiding the viewer's eye through the scene demonstrate how technical proficiency and artistic vision work together to create compelling digital artwork.

03Using 3D for Illustration

This lesson demonstrates how 2D concept art can effectively guide 3D production, with the initial sketch serving as a roadmap that resolves major design decisions before entering the more time-intensive 3D phase. Alex emphasizes that while the front-end setup requires significant effort, his methodical approach ultimately saves substantial time later by enabling quick iterations, duplications, and modifications. The combination of efficient modeling techniques, detailed sculpting, and strategic render pass preparation creates a robust foundation for final image compositing.

04Importing the Rendered Elements

This lesson demonstrates the importance of proper render-pass organization and systematic compositing when combining 3D and 2D elements. Alex emphasizes how successful digital compositing relies heavily on understanding light behavior and manually painting lighting details to sell the illusion that all elements exist in the same space. His process shows that, even with advanced 3D rendering, significant hand-painting, and photo manipulation, it's essential to put in the work to achieve a polished, unified final image.

05Assembling Our Assets

This final lesson demonstrates Alex’s systematic approach to creating compelling digital artwork by combining photographic references with digital painting techniques. The key to his success lies in thoughtful layer management, maintaining tonal control throughout the process, and applying strategic finishing touches that unify all elements into a cohesive, cinematic composition. Aaron’s workflow shows how technical precision, combined with artistic vision, can transform disparate reference materials into a convincing fictional scene.
